Twelve years ago, equestrian Olympic hopeful Olivia Canaday and her best friend, Jake Lassen, made a pinky-swear promise to reunite at the Big Marietta Fair on her thirtieth birthday and marry each other if they were both still single. But that was before they grew up and went their separate ways.
Now, after a disastrous divorce and a career-changing accident, Olivia limps home, minus her mojo, her courage and her faith in love. She retreats to her parents’ ranch, determined to play it safe, but when ex-Army helicopter pilot Jake Lassen arrives to make good on their promise, he reignites passion and hope, two things Olivia had forgotten existed.
Olivia resolves to keep Jake at arm’s length, even though the memory of his kisses keeps her up at night. She knows better than to let her heart get involved, but Jake is planning for the future. Their future. Can Jake convince her to risk it all one more time and really make this a fair to remember?

A Cowboy to Remember The Canadays of Montana Book 1 edition by Barbara Ankrum Romance eBooks
I didn't hate this book, but it is certainly nothing special. Typical storyline, typical lame excuses for our heroine to have "sworn off men." The author never made me feel the accident that left her afraid to ride horses, and there just wasn't enough substance to any of the side characters to bother even having them in the story. The step-sisters were particularly unbelievable. I laughed out loud when her divorce was headline news because of her famous equestrian husband... and again when her divorce is such a scandal in her small town, with everyone and their dog feeling soooo sorry for her. What the?? This is the 21st century where half of all marriages end in divorce. What world does Barbara Ankrum live in? The really interesting storyline of her fight with fear is so easily solved when she is forced back in the saddle, and guess what? Everything is A.O.K. The other interesting plot line could have been the hero's PTSD issues, but as is so typical with romance writers who try to put this in their stories, they evidently realize they know nothing about it, so just sort of sweep it under the rug. Yes, there are sparks and heat and sex, but if you'd also like a storyline with substance, look elsewhere.Product details

A Cowboy to Remember The Canadays of Montana Book 1 edition by Barbara Ankrum Romance eBooks Reviews
Where to start. Super good book from star to end. I felt every emotion of every single character all the way through. I wish I could have read this book sooner. A cowboy to remember warmed my heart and hit close to home. Super good book thank you Barbara Ankrum well written.
Sometimes as teens or young kids we instinctively know a whole lot more than we do as reasoning, logical adults. Jake and Olivia make a good example. Best friends both pinky swore that if they weren’t married, hadn’t found that special someone by her 30th birthday then they’d meet at the Marietta Fair and marry each other. It’s true that they each did move away from Marietta, make life choices and lived lives away from each other. Yet… life happened, and they both are now back home. And it’s time for the Marietta Fair… and they’re both there, maybe with a slight misunderstanding that’s quickly straightened out… but still, they’re both there, and they remember that old promise. Jake intends to make it come true.
Olivia’s life is far different from back when she made that promise to Jake. She moved away from home, got married… and that was the biggest mistake of her life. Now she’s divorced, holding on to memories of an abusive man who won’t seem to let go, and dealing with the aftereffects of an accident that changed the course of her dream career. Where at one time she expected to ride her horses in the Olympics, now she’s training horses and other riders to see their dreams come true. She’s a very different woman from the girl Jake knew years ago in many ways … and yet, that bright, hopeful girl is still there, buried deep under the abuse, the pain, the disappointments of life. And Jake is determined to show her that girl again, because he’s here to make good on a promise, one that means everything to him.
Jake also left home years ago to join the Army as a helicopter rescue pilot. His tours of duty taught him a lot about life and what he wants from it. Now returning home, Jake is ready to make good on a childhood promise to the girl he’s loved since that day they made a pinky vow. He’s back for Olivia, and even though life has happened for them both he’s determined to show Olivia that theirs is a love worth trusting in, if she’d only take one more risk… on him.
A Cowboy to Remember (previously titled A Fair to Remember) is a touching romance between two people who belong together in spite of what life has tossed at them when they were apart. I hurt for them both, in different ways but we’re made up of what life tosses at us, and we survive, become the person we are today. Jake’s determination, his love for Olivia… and yeah, his standing up to and dealing with her abusive ex-husband made him a hero in my eyes. I enjoyed their story very much, and would definitely recommend it to any reader who loves a good romance, interesting characters and a happy ending that is well deserved.
This title has been available in a few options in the years since it was first published – as part of the Big Marietta Fair series, part of the Mother’s Day Romance Bundle II that was a limited edition, and now as the opening story in The Canadays of Montana series under a slightly different title. I mention all of that because you might have this title in a different form, so check your memory and your library for this one.
I own a edition of this story in a couple forms myself.
What a beautiful story about lost, or misplaced love, emotional hardships, abuse and love strong enough to beat all odds. This is the first of Ms. Ankrum's work that I have had the pleasure of reading, and I honestly hope it's not the last. Her skills at spinning a beautiful tale are truly worth reading.
After finally getting out of an abusive marriage, Olivia has come home with her tail between her legs to "get back on her feet". It's her thirtieth birthday, and deep down in her heart, she hopes that her best friend, Jake, will be there to meet her at the fair, to fullfill their pinky promise of being each other's fall back if they were both still single at that time. But the blind date her sisters have set her up with just may have blown it all away, as he brags to Jake while he waits for her. Their struggle to leave the "friendship" relationship behind in lieu of a more heartwarming one, is a long battle they both fight, but for different reasons.
A beautiful story you won't want to miss. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
I liked this story....A LOT! After all; who can resist a hunk like that, and Olivia is not bad either. This story grabbed me right from the start and pulled me right into the story. I liked the fact that Olivia had a very supportive family, but one that wasn't about to let her sit around and feel sorry for herself forever. So many times you read stories about how mean the step-fathers and sisters are, but that's not the case in this story....and I have to say I found that very refreshing. I also like the fact that Jake and Olivia were best friends for many years before they took it to the next level. And even then; they didn't rush into anything major without thinking it all through, to make sure it was the right thing to do. I loved Deke and how accepting he was of Olivia. You could feel just how protective he was about his Nephew, but with good reason. Jake had been through so much already with the loss of his parents, and the PTSD caused from his years in the military....and the major accident that made him finally opt out.
This author did a great job of making these characters seem so real and believable. And the story was so well written that it just flowed so effortlessly. My only criticism....and it's just a small one; is that I felt the ending was a bit rushed. Maybe a small epilogue at the end might have helped, but that's JMO.
